Social networks are online communities generally consisting of people with similar interests. The sites usually require the user to "sign up" for an account where they can create their profile then view and share information with other members.

Most social networks allow you to post information, images, videos, etc. to your area and allow you to participate in group discussions, surveys and other social activities.

Social networks can be found on any topic from knitting to business networking! Wikipedia has a fairly detailed list of social networking sites.

Here's our take on some of the more popular ones:

Facebook - access site (approx. 200 million users)

Probably the main social network right now - a big community driven site. You have the ability to create your own area and accept "friend" requests. This allows them access to your info and you to see theirs. Many businesses are creating their own Facebook "pages" - check out ours here!

MySpace - access site (approx. 260 million users)

This site was the early leader in social networking but has since been surpassed by Facebook in usage. It is still used by many people and is adding new features. It is a great resource for musicians to add their information and music.

Twitter - access site (approx. 25 million users)

This site allows you to send short, numerous messages about what you are doing to keep in touch with your network. The message can also be sent to cell phones via texting if you like. It has become very popular in the last 4 months.

Flickr - access site (hosts 3.6 billion images!)

A photo management & sharing site allowing users to make their content available to people who matter to them. Great resources for organizing photos and now video. You can view other people's albums and comment on their content. Did you know you can embed a Flickr gallery into your website?

Digg - access site (approx. 236 million visitors in 2008)

An interesting site where the members submit information from the internet (news, videos, etc.). When other members "Digg" it the submission receives a higher ranking in the list for others to see. The site also has a large community & conversation aspect.

Momentile - access site (approx. 1,700 users)

The new kid in town! Currently in a beta stage where you can only become a tester if you've been invited. Basic concept - chronicle your year with one photo a day. Very cool and poised to take off soon!
